Break on Through

Windows are curious things. They let the light flood through during the day. They spill it back out during the night. You can see through them, and sometimes go through them.* They sometimes keep the heat in and the cold out and sometimes keep the cold out and the heat in. Some people put stickers on or paint them. Some people put bars on them, and that’s no fun (but understandable given certain circumstances). Some people like to go to abandoned buildings and smash them out.** Which brings us to the weird function that glass serves in all of this.

Most windows are basically practical, functional frames for glass. Most of the time the glass is transparent. In some cases it’s just translucent. Either way the purpose it serves is to let some things in while keeping other things out. We like the light, and the view, and the heat (or cold depending on the season). We don’t like loud uncontrollable noises or insects that want to sting us or suck our blood. Within reason, the glass in windows gives us the chance to have the best of both worlds, that is until someone like Lou comes around to pay a visit (see **note below). It acts as the most sparse barrier possible that can still serve a practical purpose, namely keep what we want in, what we don’t want out, and, much to our chagrin, it keeps Lou entertained (see **note below).

*note: There are several scenarios in which one might be motivated to do so, some innocent, some nefarious, some outright dangerous. I’ve done the innocent bit, like hanging my head out the window to enjoy a breeze or people watch. I thankfully have never found myself in the position where nefarious motivations seemed plausible or tempting. However, I have flirted with the dangerous. Long ago, I lived in a fifth floor apartment with a large window facing the street. There were more than a couple of occasions in which I thought it fun to sit on the sill in various inebriated states with my legs dangling out. In retrospect, these were some of the most idiotic decisions I’ve ever made, and I don’t at all regret making them. Hey, I’m still here, aren’t I? That said and for legal purposes, remember, windows are not recommended for use as entrances or exits. That’s what doors are for.

**note: I’ve always wondered why people do this. “Hey Lou, you wanna go down to the abandoned shoe factory and smash out some windows?” “Now that’s what I’m talkin’ about! Let’s go, and this time don’t forget to bring the GOOD hammer and the first aid kit”
