There’s a certain subset of tourism that if you stop to think about its purpose, is fascinating. Millions of people pay lots of money taking time out of their lives to go visit places that are more or less broken. The Parthenon, Machu Picchu, Alcatraz. There are even organized trips to Chernobyl. Whatever the reason, we seem to be interested in looking that things that have lost their intended function.

Of course, we could have endless discussions as to why we do this, but what I find more baffling is the extremes people will go to to see these ruins, when in many cases all you have to do is look in your own backyard. It doesn’t matter where you live, although some places are more rich than others in their supply of disregard. I’d be willing to bet that with the right attention to detail you can find just as fascinating dilapidation without having to go through all the effort of booking flights and hotel rooms and the like. And, upon finding such places, more intriguing questions may come to mind. “Why is this still here? What happened to this place? Are there people around here that might remember what this place was like when it wasn’t so broken down?”

The best part is that you don’t have to buy a ticket to see it, nor do you have to deal with parasitic hucksters trying to sell you chachkies, overpriced drinks, and badly written books. You can just sit back and witness the entropy in peace, pondering its meaning to your heart’s delight.
